November 2: Le Vaisseau fantôme
Cecilia Bartoli kicks off her season on November 2 with Wagner's The Flying Dutchman, “a profound work” that will be performed in the Salle des Princes at the Grimaldi Forum. In the role of the Dutchman, Sir Bryn Terfel emphasizes that this early work by Richard Wagner “remains one of his most dramatic.”
November 16, 20, and 22: Aïda
Also in the Salle des Princes at the Grimaldi Forum, Verdi's Aida, directed by Davide Livermore, is a production of the Rome Opera. As is evident throughout her programming, Cecilia Bartoli gives pride of place to women. In Aida, Verdi evokes what the 19th century called “feminine weapons”: charm, seduction, deception and then, in the face of defeat, the self-destruction and ruin of the beloved.
December 1: Un spectacle inédit autour de Joséphine Baker
With Bonsoir Monte-Carlo, the Monte-Carlo Opera extends the tribute paid by Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer to Josephine Baker with The Josephines at the Hauser and Wirth gallery on the 50th anniversary of her death.
The show, commissioned by the Monte-Carlo Opera, will be performed for the Prince's Day celebrations on November 19 (by invitation) and on November 21 in the Salle des Princes at the Grimaldi Forum. Inducted into the Panthéon by President Emmanuel Macron in 2021 for her resistance alongside the Free French Forces during World War II, the artist was a friend of Princess Grace. Josephine Baker spent the last years of her life in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin and regularly performed on stage at the Salle des Étoiles at the Sporting Monte-Carlo.
December 1, Roberto Alagna
With C’est magnifique !, Roberto Alagna offers a recital that serves as a retrospective of his favorite songs. Accompanied by the Monte Carlo Opera Choir, the tenor interprets memories of his youth around Luis Mariano's song C'est magnifique !. Without worrying about the musical genre, which is not the one in which the public knows him best, the tenor will also sing Frank Sinatra's My Way and O Sole mio.
December 14-31: la comédie musicale Cats
With twenty performances of Cats, the Opera is venturing into new territory, following on from last season's The Phantom of the Opera. The hit British musical will be Monte Carlo's festive musical highlight for the holiday season.
January 23, 25, 27, and 29: La Walkyrie
The sequel to Das Rheingold, The Walküre is the central piece of Richard Wagner's tetralogy. Three female characters are at the heart of the dramatic action in this new production directed by Davide Livermore. The show is presented at the Salle Garnier with Les Musiciens du Prince – Monaco. In this show, as in Aida, Davide Livermore plays with the text and the music. Technology and period instruments merge. The director thus achieves what Richard Wagner wanted to achieve: the alchemy of the arts in the service of the total work.
January 28, Orfeo ed Euridice
Orfeo ed Euridice is presented at the Salle Garnier with Il canto di Orfeo and Les Musiciens du Prince – Monaco. Cecilia Bartoli, in the role of a man, Orfeo, will express her full vocal power. It should be noted that in the 18th century, the role was sung by a castrato. This show has been performed with Les Musiciens du Prince in Salzburg, Amsterdam, Paris, and Brussels.
February 9, Cosi fan tutte
After The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni, the Vienna State Opera returns to Monaco for the third time, this time to perform Mozart's Cosi fan tutte in the Salle des Princes at the Grimaldi Forum. A great musical moment awaits!
February 14, Cecilia et Placido
Cecilia and Placido, mezzo-soprano and baritone, form a lyrical duo accompanied on piano by David Fray in the Salle Garnier. This recital draws on the singers' rapport to perform Latin works imbued with nostalgia and friendship. Placido Domingo had not returned to Monaco since 2023.
February 22, 24, 26, and 28, Pelleas et Mélisande
What a joy to see Jean-Louis Grinda back at the Monte Carlo Opera! Here, the former artistic director of the Monte-Carlo Opera, who is also artistic advisor to Monte-Carlo Société des Bains de Mer, offers his fresh take on Claude Debussy's work. This new production is conducted by Kazuki Yamada, director of the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra.
March 22, 24, 26, and 28, Il Trovatore
Giuseppe Verdi's Il Trovatore is presented at the Salle Garnier. Produced by the Monte Carlo Opera, in co-production with the Teatro Real in Madrid and the Royal Danish Opera, the work, directed by Francisco Negrin, features a number of successful arias. Once again, it is a story of women, one innocent, the object of all desires, the other, mature, consumed by her passions.
March 31, Elina Garanca
The exceptional artist Elina Garanca closes the season. In the Yakov Kreizberg Hall of the Rainier III Auditorium, the mezzo-soprano is accompanied by the Monte-Carlo Opera Chorus and the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. She sings a selection of opera arias that have marked her career and attest to her vast repertoire.
