A benchmark choir in the US, the Harlem Gospel Choir embodies the spirit of African-American gospel with its glorious voices, and delivers a contemporary repertoire tinged with jazz and blues.
Get ready to tap your feet, clap your hands, or even dance along to the rhythm of this performance that’s filled with joy and exuberance! For more than 20 years, the Harlem Gospel Choir has travelled the world sharing the power of African-American gospel, the heritage of the spiritual fervour of Black churches in Harlem.
The choir has sung for three presidents (Obama, Carter, and Mandela), two popes (Jean-Paul II and Benedict XVI), Ban Ki-Moon and the United Nations General Assembly. It has performed with superstars such as Bono, Diana Ross, The Gorillaz, Pharrell Williams, and more recently Lang Lang, Sia, Nile Rodgers and Sam Smith.
Rooted in the depths of colonial history, this gospel music took hold in the 18th century, when African slaves combined their rich musical heritage with their new Christian faith. A response to the hardships and suffering caused by slavery, their heartfelt songs went on to profoundly change the history of music. Blues, soul, rock’n’roll… they all owe their existence to this Black gospel music.
Performing today’s great gospel classics, the Harlem Gospel Choir spreads an enthusiasm that is contagious. Its inspired songs of love and hope are designed to touch the depths of the soul and raise the spirit. Its rich harmonies and musical vitality bring a liberated, joyful energy.
