What is the Monaco E-Prix?
As part of the FIA Formula E World Championship, Monaco and its E-Prix have become must-see events for fans of next-generation motorsport. The Monaco E-Prix is now one of the highlights of the international Formula E calendar, which features multiple races around the world. Before Monaco, the season makes a stop in Tokyo for a spectacular race, before returning to Europe for the Monaco round. Formula E is attracting an ever-growing audience thanks to its thrilling races and cutting-edge technological innovations, much like MotoGP. The latest Formula E news points to a season full of new developments and surprises, reflecting the unprecedented growth of electric motorsport. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, these vehicles showcase the exceptional expertise of the manufacturers involved.
The Origins of the Monaco E-Prix
Formula E in Monaco began in 2015, when the Principality was selected to host a race during the inaugural FIA Formula E World Championship season (2014–2015). Its short and demanding street circuit, combined with the prestige of the legendary Monaco Grand Prix, made it an essential addition to the calendar. The Monaco circuit boasts a rich heritage, blending tradition with innovation. At the time, electric single-seater racing was still in its early stages, yet it was already generating significant interest.
The First Electric Race in Europe Held in Monaco
The first Monaco E-Prix took place on May 9, 2015, marking a historic first for electric racing on European soil.
Founding Teams of Formula E in Monaco
Ten teams took part in the competition, including Renault, Virgin Racing, Audi, and Venturi. In front of packed grandstands, Swiss driver Sébastien Buemi (e.dams-Renault) won this first electric Grand Prix on Monegasque soil. Photos and videos from previous editions of the Monaco E-Prix allow fans to relive the highlights of the race.
A Look Back at Recent Winners
The history of Monaco E-Prix winners is defined by legendary performances and outstanding driving skills on one of the most iconic street circuits in the world.
Monaco E-Prix Results, Edition by Edition
After the inaugural edition in Monaco in 2015, won by Sébastien Buemi, the Monaco E-Prix returned two years later on May 13, 2017, with Buemi claiming victory once again. The third edition took place on May 11, 2019, where former French Formula 1 driver Jean-Éric Vergne (DS Techeetah) secured the win. In 2020, the event was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Formula E made its return to Monaco on May 8, 2021, marking the beginning of what has now become an annual event.
Champions to Watch at the Next Monaco E-Prix
The fourth Monaco race was won by Portugal’s António Félix da Costa (DS Techeetah), who started from pole position, ahead of Dutch driver Robin Frijns (Virgin-Audi) and New Zealander Mitch Evans (Jaguar). It was a thrilling finish, with last-minute changes in the standings delivering intense excitement for spectators. Live rankings allow fans to follow the race in real time. While Formula E cars may be slower than Formula 1, the intensity and excitement of the competition remain just as impressive. The 2026 Monaco E-Prix is expected to showcase this once again.
Discover the Circuit of the 2026 Monaco E-Prix
With 3.3 km of fast straights, tight corners, and challenging chicanes, the Monaco Formula E circuit delivers thrilling sensations. Each lap is a strategic challenge where even the smallest mistake can prove costly. Race stewards play a crucial role in ensuring safety across the entire track. Teams fine-tune every detail of their performance, leaving nothing to chance. During qualifying, each driver must maximize their resources to secure pole position—an essential advantage on a demanding circuit like Monaco. Lap times and qualifying results are displayed in real time, allowing fans to follow every twist and turn of the action.
A Demanding Street Track in the Heart of the City
It is worth noting that in the early editions, the layout used only part of the circuit traditionally employed for Formula 1 since 1929. Measuring 1.765 km, it did not include the Mirabeau climb or the section in front of the Monte-Carlo Casino, as the cars’ batteries at the time were not powerful enough to handle the uphill section. The start and finish lines were maintained, and the circuit featured a total of 12 corners, including iconic sections such as Sainte-Dévote, the Swimming Pool complex, and the Rascasse—key landmarks of the Monaco track.
Evolution of the Circuit Since 2021
Since 2021, thanks to major technological advancements in the cars, the circuit layout has become almost identical to the Formula 1 track. Formula E drivers now race past the iconic Casino Square and through the famous tunnel: the fastest section of the circuit. By adopting this historic layout, the Monaco E-Prix has firmly established itself among the world’s leading motorsport events.
The 100% Electric Cars of the Monaco E-Prix
Imagined by Jean Todt, former President of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), and entrepreneur Alejandro Agag, the Formula E World Championship was created to drive the development of sustainable motorsport.
A Competition Supporting Sustainability
The cars used in Formula E are powered entirely by electric engines, helping to reduce the environmental impact of motorsport while promoting low-emission mobility. Another key feature is the use of all-weather hybrid tires, designed to perform in every condition. A single set of tires is used throughout the race, reflecting a strong commitment to environmental responsibility.
Technological Evolution of Formula E Cars
During the inaugural season, including the 2015 Monaco E-Prix, all teams competed with the same model: the Spark-Renault SRT_01E. Its top speed was limited to 225 km/h, as regulated by the FIA. At the time, the 28 kWh battery capacity was not sufficient to complete the full 45-minute race, requiring drivers to switch cars mid-race. In just a few years, electric racing technology has evolved dramatically. By 2019, a new generation of cars featured batteries with doubled capacity, allowing drivers to complete the entire race with a single vehicle—significantly improving performance and race dynamics. Looking ahead, future editions promise even more technological innovation. Recent news highlights a groundbreaking Season 11, featuring a 17-race calendar, new destinations such as Miami and Jakarta, and the introduction of the GEN3 EVO, capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.82 seconds. Formula E is clearly entering a new era, continuing to attract growing interest, particularly in countries like France where enthusiasm for electric mobility is rapidly expanding.
The Program of the Monaco E-Prix 2026
Unlike the Monaco Grand Prix, which takes place over four days, the Monaco Formula E event is held over two days.
Free Practice and Qualifying: The Day Schedule
From 8:00 a.m., free practice sessions begin, with two sessions allowing drivers to test their car setups while mastering every corner of the Monaco street circuit. Teams fine-tune their strategies to optimize performance. Although lap times are recorded, they do not count toward the final results.
At midday, Formula E’s elite drivers take to the track for qualifying, where they are divided into four groups. Two flying laps determine the six fastest drivers, who advance to the Super Pole shootout. Each driver must carefully manage energy consumption to maximize performance. This session determines the fastest driver, who secures pole position along with three additional points in the FIA World Championship standings—a unique feature of Formula E.
The Race: Attack Mode and Fanboost
At around 3:30 p.m., the Monaco E-Prix race begins. Over 45 minutes plus one lap, drivers can activate Attack Mode, which provides an extra 25 kW of power on top of the standard 200 kW. This strategic feature often creates dramatic race twists, where a single lap can change the outcome from victory to defeat. Drivers battle intensely to climb the rankings and compete for the championship title, with some races decided by mere thousandths of a second. To ensure safety and smooth race operations, race stewards closely monitor every aspect of the event using advanced safety systems. Formula E also offers an interactive element: five drivers receive a Fanboost, granting an additional 25 kW of power for five seconds. This boost is voted for by fans via the FIA’s social media platforms ahead of the race.
Fans can easily book tickets online, with various access options available. Full event details can be found on the official Automobile Club de Monaco website. Formula E in Monaco began in 2015. That year, the Principality was chosen to be part of the inaugural season of the FIA Formula E World Championship (2014–2015). Its short and demanding street circuit, combined with the legendary aura of the Monaco Grand Prix, made it a natural choice. At the time, single-seater electric racing was still in its early days but already generating huge interest. On May 9, 2015, the very first Monaco E-Prix took place—an electric racing first on European soil. Ten teams took part, including Renault, Virgin Racing, Audi and Venturi. A Look Back at Recent Winners
The 2026 edition of the Monaco E-Prix marks its eighth occurrence in the event’s history. Since debuting on the Formula E calendar in 2015, the Monaco race has been absent only three times: in 2016, 2018, and 2020. Sébastien Buemi holds the record for most wins in the Principality, taking victory twice in 2015 and 2017 while driving for e.dams-Renault. In 2019, Jean-Éric Vergne claimed the top spot behind the wheel of his DS Techeetah. In 2021, António Félix da Costa gave DS Techeetah another triumph, before Stoffel Vandoorne secured victory for Mercedes in 2022, the same year he became champion. In 2023, Nick Cassidy crossed the finish line first with Envision Racing. That year, current Jaguar driver Mitch Evans joined Cassidy and Jake Dennis on the podium, in a thrilling race remembered for the impressive recoveries of Jean-Éric Vergne and Stoffel Vandoorne, who climbed to 7th and 9th after starting from the back. Last year’s event saw Mitch Evans take the win ahead of Nick Cassidy, earning a one-two finish for Jaguar, with Stoffel Vandoorne completing the podium for DS Penske. Pascal Wehrlein also delivered a strong performance for Porsche, finishing just outside the podium and proving his consistency throughout the season.
2026 Monaco E-Prix Schedule
Unlike the Monaco Grand Prix which takes place over three days, the Monaco Formula E competition unfolds over two days. Free practice sessions begin at 8 a.m., allowing drivers to fine-tune their settings and learn every turn of the Monaco circuit. These timed sessions do not count towards the final result but are essential for performance optimization.
At noon, the elite of Formula E head out for qualifying. Drivers are divided into four groups, and after two laps each, the top six move on to the Super Pole session. This phase determines the fastest driver, who earns pole position as well as three bonus points for the FIA World Championship—one of the unique features of Formula E. All results are officially validated by the FIA following the conclusion of each round.
Around 3:30 p.m., the Monaco E-Prix race begins. Over 45 minutes + 1 lap, drivers can activate Attack Mode, temporarily boosting power by 25 kW from the usual 200 kW. This often reshuffles the race in dramatic fashion. Strategy is key, as drivers must manage their car’s energy efficiently to maximize points. This season also marks the debut of a new, more powerful car: the GEN3 EVO, capable of reaching 60 mph in just 1.82 seconds. Formula E is entering a new era.
